It's feeling like 2003 E-mail

From Pirates.com:

"The free-agent market is not over," president Frank Coonelly said during the second question-and-answer session with management this weekend. "We're still being very active. I would be very surprised if we don't ... sign players that you would fall in love with this year, between now and the beginning of Spring Training."

Now, I know there's lots of aversion to signing free agents because of the way that Dave Littlefield handled things in his disastrous run as GM, but Charlie's got a good post up on his blog about how the Nationals did a nice job of turning stop-gap free agent acquisitions into useful prospects, and it's something that Huntington and company can take to heart.

I'm guessing the team is looking at someone to come in and play left/right field for 2009 until Andrew McCutchen is ready, probably in 2010. I mean, there's got to be more to this kind of talk than Braden Looper, right?

In his brand-new blog (somehow, he figured out how to wire an IBM Selectric to the interwebs), He With Pointy Hair Whose Name Shall Not Be Spoken has suggested re-signing Dougy Whatizname as a free agent--he is, after all, a clubhouse leader. I believe Tiger Hoak's name might have come up as well.

OK, I'm laughing out loud in my lab now and everyone is staring at me kind of funny.

What's even more pathetic than The Evil One's suggestion about signing Monkeywich is that the vast majority of the comments are supporting that suggestion. That is the main roadblock that NH and company face; the inability of the Yinzer masses to understand that no amount of free agent signings or gritty veteranosity is going to make this team a winner this year. They think that increasing payroll will make the Pirates competitive, instead of seeing that money be put towards another draft class like last year that might actually produce long-lasting, albeit delayed, results.

Instant gratification, baby. That's what the Wal-Mart Generation wants, and they want it now.

When I read "He With Pointy Hair Whose Name Shall Not Be Spoken," I immediately thought of... well, him, but I thought, "there's no way he would ever write a blog." That "retirement" package he got must have forced him into it.

Can I ask a question - what happens when McCutcheon struggles for his first few seasons? It's not like he has been extraordinary in AAA or AA, even considering his age. What if, gasp, McCutcheon turns out to be no better than Morgan? Or Tabata never develops power? Then what?

And what happens if Robbie Grossman turns out to be the second coming of Ken Griffey Jr., or if Justin Wilson and Quinton Miller are the next Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine?

It's just amazing the level of negativity that some people have toward the team they claim to root for and care about. Yes, there have been monumental missteps and colossal blunders made over the past 16 years, but Coonelly and Huntington have only been in power for a little over a year, so let's try to give them the benefit of the doubt before tagging them as failures. It's entirely possible that the next 16 years will be losers just as the previous 16 were, but let's wait and see instead of assuming doom and gloom.

Eh. It's like, what if Delmon Young doesn't develop patience and is still a jerk? What if Eli Dukes is a certified nutjob?

You keep building a strong system to overcome missteps, chronics, back injuries, and things that don't work out.

I guess to answer your question directly I'd say, that would suck, and it might take even longer than expected to build a winner.

Is it me, or does if feel like McCutchen is taking a VERY long time to develop? After all, for someone who is supposed to be a 5-tool player, his slugging percentage seems to be quite low. Or are they trying to turn him into a contact hitter, in which case his .283 average last year is still quite low for the #1 prospect in the system?
