Pirates claim Justin Thomas off of waivers. Here are his minor league stats. Six walks per nine innings! That'll be exciting.

A little more on the Class-A affiliate swap from the PG. The official annoucnement is expected on November 11th, and as we suspected the move is being made to get an affiliate close to Pirate City in Bradenton.

If you use iTunes, Game 7 of the 1971 World Series is available for a $1.99 download.

Bud Selig said that 21 won't be retired across baseball in honor of Roberto Clemente. As nice of a gesture as I think it would be to retire Clemente's number, I think that it's right that Robinson has such a unique tribute paid to him.

I have to agree with the idea of not retiring 21 for every team. If you get to the point where you retire a dozen numbers game-wide, it diffuses the effect of the gesture. I'm also glad that players like Ruben Sierra or Carlos Delgado who wear the number in tribute can still do so; I think that has more meaning than a "47" on the fence at Kauffman Stadium or Petco. Of course, this is Bud Selig showing a significant measure of good judgement, so I suspect it's just a matter of time before he reverses himself.

I meant "42" for Robinson, of course. If Bud wants to retire "47", that's OK as well.

Perry Hill replacement hired.
They're promoting Carlos Garcia to the 1B Coach and Infield instructor. Anyone have an opinion on this hire?

i'd actually want to see 21 retired. retiring one number other than 42 won't open any "floodgates." somehow, frank robinson and jackie's widow have convinced bud selig that retiring 21 would dilute the retiring of 42. which to me makes no sense. what jackie did for blacks in baseball cannot be understated. but we're quick to forget about clemente's influence on the latin american side of the game. not to mention the manner in which he passed, as an advocate for the game and the human aspect of its players. i approached this back in 2007

Nice job on the wins and the runner up on the Bloguin awards. Not sure if its an omen, but anytime that something related to the Pirates wins an award it makes me feel better.
