Reportedly, one of the names on the Pirates' shopping list this off-season is Hank Blalock. My thoughts on that, in one word: NO.

Why not? He's normally a pretty solid player, he's just coming off a down year. Who would he be blocking, exactly? Jeff Clement? We're not even sure if he can actually play first yet. Pedro Alvarez? If they decide to move him to first, Blalock will definitely not be blocking him.

How is this anything other than a solid buy-low move that might result in a prospect or two at the deadline?

Bad year
He's not having a bad year, though; he hasn't had a good full season since 2004, he spent a good deal of time at DH because of his injury problems last year, and he's never hit well anywhere outside of Arlington. He'd just be a waste of a roster spot.

Hmm...point taken. I assumed when you linked to the splits you were referring to his platoon splits. I didn't see the sizeable home/away gap.

It's pretty apparent that

a)Blalock is best cast as a DH at this point
b)he's probably not looking to be a Mientkiewicz-esque role player
c)peanut butter and hand grenades...oh, yes.
