Mistake of little consequence This was clearly a mistake, but not a very big one. We should have gotten something for him but we would be extremely lucky to get something useful for him. I allow all GM's some mistakes. If all of NH's mistakes stay in this size and the growth of the system (dramatic IMO) continues I think we're going the right way. This is nowhere near the magnitude of the signings of Kendell, Young, Mears, etc. or even trading Willie Randolph, Dock Ellis and Ken Brett for Doc Medich. I'd like to buy NH an antacid and ask what he's learned from this. |

... Now what do you think about Fangraphs valuing Capps at $2.625 a year the past 4 years? I agree that we need relievers, but I'm not sure that justifies overpaying for a shaky asset at best in Matthew C. |

... 3 thoughts pop into my head: 1) The trade value being offered, even before the news of the pending non-tender leaked was so low that it wasn't worth it. 2) He (Neal) tried to bluff and was backed into a corner and didn't want to lose face. 3) There's something wrong with Capps, either his arm or his shoulder. It's not showing up in the medical tests, but when you see him throw it's obvious (at least to a trained eye.) Either way, it's hard to be upset with a guy with a 5+ ERA last year who was hurt a lot getting non-tendered. Is our collective upsetment about this akin to rearranging deck chairs on the titanic ? |

... Granted, relief pitchers are, as a group, not exactly great long-term investments--and God knows watching Capps close a game often made some of Mike Williams efforts back in the day seem downright calming. I'm not so focused on the idea that it was Capps that was non-tendered as much as the process. If you believe what Capps and his agent are saying, there is a market for Capps, which makes him an asset with some value; NH acted in a manner that minimized the value of that asset. If he learns from his mistake here, all you've lost is a closer whose value going forward is a question mark--but he can't afford to make those kinds of mistakes going forward when the assets are named McCutchen or Alvarez. |

What I'll miss... Capps did some nice pitching for a time and was fun to watch in his earliest years. What I will miss is your vivid descriptions of games, Pat, that involved Matt Capps. A favorite from the late August game against the Phils when Cutch hit the walkoff: " that the Pirates carried at 3-2 lead into the ninth inning. Of course, then Matt Capps pooped all over that lead," I guess we'll still have incontinent relievers but that was priceless. |
