Pirates to add Mazeroski statue to PNC Park E-mail

MazRoundsThird

That's the big news today. As much as I'd love for it to be of him turning a double play (I can't be the only one that wants to see this, can I?), I nominate this image from above, which I've always liked more than the famous home plate mob scene. For my money, no picture better embodies what the relationship between Pittsburgh and the Pirates can and should be.

At U.S. Cellular Field, the White Sox put statues of Nellie Fox and Luis Aparicio turning a double play. It's a cool setup. I like your idea above better for Mazeroski, though. I'm not sure he has an Aparicio counterpart.

Love that pic! The only one that may even be close is the one of fans' reaction from a balcony while WATCHING Maz's shot! As for the double play, as long as Rey Quinones is NOT the shortstop, throwing a perfect Maz feed into the third row, I'm all for that too!

People?
The double play idea would certainly be cool in an understated sort of way, but obviously it will be the home run. My question is: can you have those other people as part of the statue? This turn around 3B and the home plate scene rely on a bunch of other people in the picture for their poignancy. There is a picture I saw on the PG yesterday of him turning 2B in full gallop with his hat off that I thought captured his enthusiasm in a solitary moment.

It will be Maz running between second and third after his home run, like in photo from the P-G story (http://post-gazette.com/pg/10027/1031262-63.stm).

Just finished reading "The Best Game Ever" by Jim Reisler. Not terribly original writing, but some fabulous Pittsburgh atmosphere surrounding The Game and a nice New York-free view of the '60 Series. Got it at the library but here's an Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Gam...160&sr=1-4

I would pay $15-$20 for an hour-long DVD of Maz turning two and Clemente throwing. I'm not sure people today would believe it wasn't CGI.
