Game 84: Astros 6 Pirates 3

I want to submit a new metric for futility in a Pirate game. To be honest, I’m not a huge Greg Brown fan and whenever I turn on MLB.tv and find out he’s doing the game, I’ll often (let’s say about 67% of the time) check out the opponents feed. I like hearing other announcers, especially their take on the Pirates, and more often than not I check them out when Brown’s announcing. Just a personal preference, really, and at this point it is what it is.

But one thing I will say for Brown is that no one, for any team, has matched the his call for when things finally go beyond the Pirates’ control. Whenever the Pirates lose their handle on things, Brown always responds with a single, nearly emotionless, “Oh, my.” Tonight, Ryan Doumit got crossed up with Evan Meek and a let a ball get to the backstop, extending the Astros lead from 5-3 to 6-3. In Pirate-land, that’s the same as turning a big deficit into an insurmountable one.

“Oh, my,” said Brown without the pitch or tone of his voice changing even one bit.

We know how you feel, Greg. We know how you feel.

About Pat Lackey

In 2005, I started a WHYGAVS instead of working on organic chemistry homework. Many years later, I've written about baseball and the Pirates for a number of sites all across the internet, but WHYGAVS is still my home. I still haven't finished that O-Chem homework, though.
