John Gibbons will not manage the Pirates

Yesterday, Buster Olney was saying that he thought John Gibbons was pretty much a done deal to be the Pirates’ next manager (via Bucs Dugout, since I obviously didn’t see it myself because they don’t invite Olney on SportsCentre and hell, the bar I was in last night was playing Wednesday Night Hockey instead of what I later found out was an awesome, awesome Giants/Phillies game). Today, we learn that Gibbons has withdrawn his name from consideration.

John Gibbons withdraws as candidate to become Pittsburgh’s next manager. Will remain as #Royals‘ bench coach.Thu Oct 21 21:15:47 via web

Gibbons sounded awfully interested when he talked to Rob Biertempfel the other day, so this is kind of odd and out of the blue. Not that I’m complaining: Gibbons was pretty far from my favorite candidate because of his history of fighting with his players. Still, the 180 is strange. Maybe an announcement is coming?

About Pat Lackey

In 2005, I started a WHYGAVS instead of working on organic chemistry homework. Many years later, I've written about baseball and the Pirates for a number of sites all across the internet, but WHYGAVS is still my home. I still haven't finished that O-Chem homework, though.
