What I found was perhaps not surprising – the strike zone did continue to expand, and that expansion was almost entirely due to the bottom of the zone dropping once again. What surprised me was that this season saw the largest single year increase in the size of the strike zone in the PITCHf/x era.
I’m starting to compile an outline for an off-season approach here at WHYGAVS (we’ll start with what the Pirates need to do this winter and talk about qualifying offers in the near future), but it’s not quite together yet. Until then, check out this great post at The Hardball Times by John Roegele about the ridiculous strike zone expansion that’s been happening in Major League Baseball and how far it went in 2014.
