Afternoon game

Johnny Cueto, who’s dominated the Pirates today, takes the mound against Jeff Karstens, who runs out of gas after five innings and has a trade decimated bullpen behind him. I don’t particularly like the Pirates’ odds today.

UPDATED to say that holy freaking crap, Andrew McCutchen is a beast. Thumped in the head with a fastball last night, scared the holy bejus out of everyone, and is back in the lineup like 16 hours later.

First pitch is at 12:35; Clemente/Cangelosi is after the jump.

Not sure what this is? Check here and here. Short version: in the comments pick the Pirates you think will be most and least valuable in today’s game. If you haven’t jumped aboard yet, it’s been a lot of fun so far and now’s as good a time as any to join in.

Got the two-day update in! Today in “WPA isn’t always the best metric for this game” is our example of Joel Hanrahan’s taking home last night’s Clemente because Evan Meek made the game a one-run game, while Neil Walker’s RBIs came after the Pirates were already ahead. Alas, maybe we’ll change things up next year.

Anyways, the up-to-the-second standings:

About Pat Lackey

In 2005, I started a WHYGAVS instead of working on organic chemistry homework. Many years later, I've written about baseball and the Pirates for a number of sites all across the internet, but WHYGAVS is still my home. I still haven't finished that O-Chem homework, though.

Afternoon game!

For the first time this year, I’ve been taken off guard by a 12:35 start. This won’t be the last time this happens. The Pirates have now quickly slid into a four-game losing streak after sweeping the Cubs and not embarrassing themselves twice against the Cardinals. Zach Duke gets a chance to break the streak and since he’s pitching at home and against the Brewers I guess that’s possible. Homer Bailey, who’s walking a lot of batters this year and struggling pretty heavily so far, goes for the Reds.

Pressed for time here but will try to get an update for the first pitch.

Afternoon game!

Paul Maholm and Ricky Nolasco take the mound at 12:35 today as the Pirates go for the sweep and ensure that you’ll have something to keep you from getting too bored at work this afternoon. It certainly looks like an interesting pitching matchup that I’d like to actually be able to watch myself if I weren’t in lab this afternoon, but such is life, I suppose.
