Don’t wave the white flag

Once upon a time, two terrible baseball teams played a terrible baseball game. A bored college student watched the whole thing and wrote about every minute detail. Two things came as a result of that; the old WHYGAVS had what is still one of the biggest traffic days in the history of the site and everyone started calling Ryan Vogelsong “The White Flag.”

The White Flag returns to PNC Park today for his first big league start in almost seven years and I’ll put it simply: the Pirates better not lose to Ryan Freaking Vogelsong. I’m happy for him that he’s managed to get back to this point in his career after such a long detour, but I hope he gives up 8 runs this afternoon. Jeff Karstens, meanwhile, will try to continue his streak of solid starts since he’s been added to the rotation. He’ll also try his best to not turn into a pumpkin in or around the fifth inning. First pitch today is at 12:35.

Today in awful decisions allegedly made by Clint Hurdle: Chris Carter wanted to cancel the X-Files, but Hurdle convinced him to bring it back and replace Mulder and Scully with Liquid Metal Terminator and What’s Her Face.

About Pat Lackey

In 2005, I started a WHYGAVS instead of working on organic chemistry homework. Many years later, I've written about baseball and the Pirates for a number of sites all across the internet, but WHYGAVS is still my home. I still haven't finished that O-Chem homework, though.
