Futility in tidy graphic form

Today FanGraphs rolled out their WAR grids tool as a way to make handy visual representations of players’ offensive WAR by age across eras. The first thing I did was plug in all of the Pirates ever. The second thing I did was plug in all of the Pirates since 1993. I should’ve stopped with the first one.
WAR graphs futilityIf you’re ever having trouble describing how bad the Pirates have been since 1993 to someone, say this: “In 1997, Joe Randa hit .302/.366/.451 and played excellent defense. On the basis of that season and that season alone, he is one of the 20 or so best Pirate position players since the team last made the playoffs.”

Thanks to Brian and Cory for getting the ball rolling on this one.

About Pat Lackey

In 2005, I started a WHYGAVS instead of working on organic chemistry homework. Many years later, I've written about baseball and the Pirates for a number of sites all across the internet, but WHYGAVS is still my home. I still haven't finished that O-Chem homework, though.
