Pirates claim Garrett Olson off of waivers

The Pirates are currently playing the Orioles, but that didn’t keep Neal Huntington off of the waiver wire today as the Bucs claimed lefty Garrett Olson from the Mariners. Olson was a first round pick by the Orioles in 2005, but he’s struggled quite a bit with the O’s and Mariners over his four-year big league career. He’ll presumably be used as a lefty out of the bullpen if he makes the team, though, and since he’s been better against lefties and as a reliever, maybe there’s something there. Better is a relative term, of course, so maybe the Pirates are just maneuvering in case Joe Beimel or Scott Olsen aren’t ready for Opening Day. Kevin Hart is going on the 60-day DL to make room for Olson.

About Pat Lackey

In 2005, I started a WHYGAVS instead of working on organic chemistry homework. Many years later, I've written about baseball and the Pirates for a number of sites all across the internet, but WHYGAVS is still my home. I still haven't finished that O-Chem homework, though.
