Sometimes, there’s just not much to say about a baseball game. The Pirates only seriously threatened to score once last night, in the fifth inning. The problem is one that I think Pirate fans are probably familiar with; when the offense isn’t clicking on all cylinders, there’s always the risk that they’re going to tumble down a high-strikeout/no-walk rabbit hole. They’ve mostly gotten by since the Detroit series thanks to timed-Christmas-light-like outbursts from Starling Marte, Gregory Polanco, Neil Walker, and a little bit of Pedro Alvarez. That’s only four hitters, though, and it’s been a rare night when more than two of them have really contributed. So long as that’s the truth, the Pirates will be prone to the occasional game like this one.
